Treasures . . . or Trash?

Our second week of yard sale-ing and no treasures to be found yet. Except towards the end people kept giving Charity stuff for free. So kind . . . but I don't want to have a yard sale of my own! The "Christmas Village box" awaits . . . :o)

What are we doing here?

Nothing like a timely email . . .

----- Message ----
From: Robbie Eaton
To: Dave & Diana Cook

Subject: How are you folks?

I've thought of you lately, wondering how it's going with the Cambodians [Asians] and if you are still happy there.

I can't help but wish you were back here!

We have Bro. Kyle Stoops and his family here now. He resigned his church in Winterport, and Bro. Tom Channel and his wife are there now. We also have Bro. Kevin Coffin and his family coming to help us. They live in Glenburn, so they have a ways to drive. But they felt to come and be with us.

But we don't have anybody like you! WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK!

Robbie Eaton

Dear Sis. Eaton (former missionary to Mexico) sent us this sweet email this morning . . . nice timing on a week when Dave and I are scratching our heads going, "What are we doing here?" Our lives are so pointless, it seems, compared to before.

But God know and our family time is great. Not to mention, the exceptional medical care that Gramma's receiving.

My all-time favorite song . . . I fall back on and hold these lyrics so true, to follow Him and trust Him to order my steps because I would have so walked a different path than the one he's lead me on. It is true that our ways are not God's ways . . . and it's a good thing! No telling the messes we'd have ourselves in!

Trust His Heart
by Babbie Mason

All things work for our good though sometimes we can't see how they could.
Struggles that break our hearts in two sometimes blind us to the truth.
Our Father knows what's best for us His ways are not our own.
So when your pathway grows dim, and you just can't see Him.
Remember you're never alone.

God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don't understand.
When you don't see His plan.
When you can't trace His hand, Trust His heart.

He sees the master plan and He holds our future in His hands.
So don't live as those who have no hope all our hope is found in Him.
We see the present clearly but He sees the first and the last.
And like a tapestry He's weaving you and me to someday be just like Him.

God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don't understand.
When you don't see His plan.
When you can't trace His hand, Trust His heart.

He alone is faithful and true.
He alone knows what is best for you.
So when you don't understand.
When you don't see His plan.
When you can't trace His hand trust His heart.

Hygiene & Health

Charity had her first "real" dentist visit today. Her first one last year didn't turn into much because she wouldn't cooperate at all. This one didn't go quite that swell either. But we got through. An improvement!

I specifically went to a certain, well-known, pediatric dental office about 30 minutes away and "hyped" Charity up that she would have a "girl" dentist (this was the issue last time, she said). They assured me when I made the appointment, Charity would have a "girl" dentist. The hygienists all did pretty good, but she wasn't really cooperating too well. She wouldn't have her x-rays done. The tip of the iceberg was when the "boy" dentist came to check her teeth. She lost it. Needless to say, we had to hold her down to that reclining dentist chair and he spoke very loudly to me as Charity screamed her little lungs out. Ohhhh, I told them, but they didn't listen. I couldn't tell the dentist to leave and I didn't want to make a big, deal in front of Charity. Fun, fun!! Hopefully she's not too traumatized and will go back for her teeth's sake!

So she wouldn't completely erase the day from her memory, we decided to head over to West Side Athletic Club to sign up for the gymnastics class we've been promising her. Whoo hoo! Got that done and it looks like she's going to love it. Starts next Monday @ 3:30 PM. Remember that, Diana!

A Price to be Paid . . .

$287.05 . . .
and I've got a working laptop! Whoo hoo!! Not sure any price would have been too high to get my baby back!! :o) Ha!

And it's only Wednesday . . .

Yesterday was a disaster . . . seems like everything I touched spilled, everything I started failed, my mind was playing tricks on me . . . then things just got plain weird. The weirdos carrying on their conversations so loud at Las Palmas we couldn't ignore them and then the dude in the neighborhood videoing the ice cream truck (though the guy is freaky and needs to be reported . . . I guess I can see why.) Anyway, Dave and I both thought we had left planet Earth and entered some very strange galaxy . . . I don't know, it's hard to explain. But just weird!!

I'm happy to report today is so much better!!

~ Had a dentist appointment today. Had to finagle work and it, but it all "worked" out!

~ Had to figure out where to park and get to my appointment by 10 AM. (I don't do mornings, so I usually never schedule anything before noon unless it's an emergency. Not sure how this happened?!?!) But I did it . . . . and overcame one of my biggest fears . . . parking garages!! I hate 'em. YAY!! Thank God, He saved me a little spot by the opening where I could drive right through so I was parked facing out with lots of natural light shining in. You're laughing . . . but that was a huge stress for me this morning!! I really, really hate them!!

~ Had a great dentist appointment, like the new dentist: a girl!! Yay!! She spend 6 years in Nantucket. Yippee!! Note to self: don't wear perfume to dentist appointments. Edgaar (Mr. Dental Assistant Man) called me Perfect Teeth Vanilla Girl. "Vanilla, right?" he said. Oh dear!! Yep, I love me some Vanilla. And he's got a good sniffer!

~ Was overtaken by Southern hospitality (what is that anyway? I could start a whole 'nother blog on that!!) by the sweet, Auntie Jamima when I didn't have $2.50 in cash or check for parking in their lovely garage (and forgot to get my ticket validated). Thank the Lord she already ordered her lunch or she may not have let me out of there!! (She looks as if she wanted to eat me and she was comping away!) Such a sweetie!! Acted like she did me such a big favor by "letting me go free this time." But it wasn't like she did me a big thing. I just forgot to get my stupid ticket stamped! Hell-o!! Oh well! She couldn't make me mad. I was so happy the dentist liked my teeth . . . oh, it's a long story, but every dentist Dave and I go to they always love his teeth and how great he takes care of them and say I need to floss or something! When I'm the one that flosses everyday and brushes no less than twice a day . . . and we won't go into his dental ritual, but it's definitely lacking! . . . well, we'll see what they say 'bout his chops next month!!

~ I do have a small cavity. Which she said was kinda' not my fault. Still paying for the damage a $700 Jolly Rancher candy did to my tooth our first summer here. I guess what's happening is the crown that was put in, is so tight against the tooth in front of it, it's kinda' rotting the front tooth. Nasty . . . add it to my mouth of metal. That will be done on Monday, July 21st. Yipppppperrs!

~ Then if things couldn't get any better . . . (I know, I'm not hard to please, really!) Nashville Computer called me on my way home and said my computer's up and running . . . I wish it could run home . . . just kidding! Ha! Rick got it fixed and even cleaned it up a bit. Whoo hooo! He said it still runs kinda' slow. But I have a feeling that's the way it's always been. It will do! So I'm going to get my little idol tonight to resume my evening worship session. I can't wait to have it in my arms again!! :p

Laptop :(

It's not looking good for my dear laptop. Nashville Computer called and after replacing the loose adaptor jack it is not booting up. I think the dude fried it. I'm not happy!! It worked "almost" fine when I brought it there. Never had trouble booting up . . . time will tell where we end up with this thing!!

Working Two Jobs

Poor Gramma's at chemo and I'm stressing out because for some reason today Charity is not letting me get anything done. She's usually pretty compatible. But today . . . one second it's: I hungry, next it's: I need this, or can you help me here?, etc . . . I love my little bugga' . . . but she's making me crazy!!!

Sorry XRT, I'm not getting much done today. Maybe, tomorrow . . .

Surprise Success!!

So I got this idea last night that I'd turn our little Memorial Day Cookout today into a surprise party for Dave. His birthday is Tuesday. I had pretty much finished dessert yesterday . . . so I got to thinking . . . because he's driving the church van, he gets home about an hour after us. Perfect!

So Charity and I fled church a little early in route to get out our party supplies. To the Dollar Tree for balloons and Wal*Mart for cards . . . I'm bad about cards, I always get them at the last minute. Ran home, decorated the table and finished the frozen strawberry dessert thingy and put the candles in it. He called for a ride home from the church and Mom so sweetly went and picked him up, while I completed the finishing touches.

SURPRISE!!
I See You:
Enjoy some corn:

Our Memorial Day Dessert/Dave's Birthday Cake:
He was SURPRISED!! Yay! And I was more so . . . that I had pulled it off!! Well, he did wonder about the red, white and blue star necklaces Charity was wearing when she went to pick him up. He asked her where she got them and she said, "Dollar Store." He knew we were up to something, but thought it wasn't until Tuesday.
Whoo hooo!!

Catch me if you can . . .

I've decided if running errands was exercise, I would be the fittest woman in the world!! Ha!

We got lots accomplished today . . . but Dave ran us girls like a drill sargent. Sargent Dave! But he had good thinking, that if we got everything done early in the day, we could enjoy a nice, relaxing family evening. Good thinking, that is, if you're alive by evening to enjoy it!!!

So, we decided we'd do the yard sale thing in the morning. We're looking for a few things and every now and then we get the idea that we'll venture out early Saturday for that bargain of a lifetime. Dave is so prepared. Had the Yard Sale section from the last three days of The Tennessean and we were off, excited as to what we might find . . . . four hours later, exhausted and hungry we headed to Costco to fill the tank from our morning hunt that brought us . . . nothing!! Oh well, that's how it goes. Persistence is part of the game. Luckily I got lots of experience with this growing up with my mom, the Yard Sale Queen!! Well, Charity did buy some multi-colored, heart-shaped bangles. A dozen of the lovely things, new in the package for just $0.50. I'm glad somebody found a treasure!

At Costco we also picked us some Rotisserie Chicken Salad wraps for lunch, that Grumpy (Dave's dad) had recommend. Very yummy!!

Back at home, I could have so easily dozed off on my nice spot on the sofa. But it was off again. Dave decided we should take Charity to some Metro water park off Charlotte. So he got the information and again, off we headed. And drove right on by . . . it was a little busy, like 1200 other people, among other reasons I didn't think it was a good idea . . .

So we headed off to Bicentennial to see if they had those fountains going . . . no such luck. Charity was bummed, but handled it well. We did walk around the park and take in some sun. Yumm!!
A little dance with Daddy:
While Mommy checked out the beautiful flowers. I love these big, ole magnolias!!
A family shot:

To Aldi and Big Lots for the cheap stuff. Back home to put it away and then back out we went. This time to Dunkin Donuts for coffee for the ride and then to Wal*Mart. The real deal. Got everything we need for tomorrow's BBQ. No need for produce, because we bought that earlier in the day at a farm stand. Oh, did I forget to write that. Oops! That was the best stop of the day!! Last stop we decided to head to the Red Box for a DVD (Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium).

Charity helping out with some of the driving on our busy day . . . just kidding!! :P
Being silly in the car, Help me . . .

We've finally arrived home and I'm not going anywhere the rest of the day! Whoo hoo! Happily back at my spot on the sofa, relaxing with my feet up after the marathon of chores today . . . but I guess that what weekends are for!?!?!

Pomp & Circumstance and Ben & Jerry's

Long day at work today. Worked 8 hours yesterday and today to make up for vacation days. Days like today I wished I worked for a company that offered paid vacation time. Oh well, can't complain. Didn't have to brush my teeth before clocking in!!

Ate quick dinner and then ran out of the house for the evening's events.

Charlene and Catherine, the beautiful, intelligent twins, I get to call my friends, graduated tonight from Harpeth High School.

First had to stop at Wally World and get cards and cash back. Then our daily trip to Dunkin Donuts. Thank God for lite lattes!! Got to Curb Event Center just as the the graduation started. First thing ran into Sis. Carmen, their mom, and gave her their cards to deliver (just in case we didn't see them, and we didn't . . . except from a distance!). Both girls were valedictorians, as well as Danielle, another super, sweet gal at First Church, that helps in Charity's Sunday School class. So proud of all the girls. They all gave lovely speeches and the twins sang beautifully, as usual. Pray that Charity will follow in their smart, Godly footsteps. What amazing role models!!

The night was so young and warm when we were through, we couldn't head to bed. Drove to Ben and Jerry's for some frozen yogurt. I had Half Baked. So yummy with brownie chunks and chocolate chip cookie dough and only 4 points!! Charity had chocolate and it was everywhere!! Glad she enjoyed it! And for Dave it was Black Raspberry. Strolled slowly back to the car as we enjoyed our treats, only to be asked by some dude with two very tiny babies for some money. These people make me sick. I wanted to call Human Services. So sad. Dave gave him $5 and he was on his way. Using those little twins as bait!!

We were going to head to Centennial Park for a little walk. But after that encounter we figured we head on home. Dave decided to take a little drive to scout out a new Fox Ridge subdivision. He likes to see how how much are house is worth in other areas for no good reason . . . and he gets after me about blogging . . . . see, we all have our hobbies!!

School Days

I'm guessing Charity's really bored and misses having some kiddos her age to play with. Her teachers made her a picture frame with a picture of her class in it as a "end-of-year" gift. Today I caught her gazing reflectively upon it. She looked as if she was about to cry. When I asked her what was wrong, she agreed that she missed going to school and her friends. And then pointed specifically to Mary Jean, her bestie.

I reminded her that after next week, she will be starting Summer school. And lucky for Charity they've put Mary Jean in her Summer class, too. June 3rd can't get here fast enough for her!

Grief . . .

I can't even begin to imagine what Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman are feeling this evening. All I can do is pray and know that someday they will be with their little Maria again.

Dave reminded me that bad things do happen to good people. Why? And just because you have Jesus things aren't always a "bed of roses". Why? I know it's true, but so hard for our human minds to comprehend.

How tragic? How terrible? God knew what would happen this day and knows the future for this precious family. Poor Will Franklin. This life is unfair and cruel. Thank God He says our life here on earth is just vapour. * Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. James 4:14 * And though things can be so unexplainable and some days unbearable, before we know it we will be able to to bask in His perfect presence for ETERNITY. Maria has just beat us there.

Happy 50th Birthday, Mom!!

Today is Mom's 50th birthday and before you know it we'll be there celebrating with her! It's going to be so fun!! Much, much, much to do . . . and not long now!

It's nearly time . . .

So I just don't know now!! I took tomorrow off to go to Charity's School Picnic. And now the rain!!! I'm just interceding it away . . . I know, despite the drought conditions in parts of Tennessee!!

I did stay up late, late night to get the majority of my packing done. Didn't do too much today. Just house cleaning and such.

Still have toiletries to pack or condiments (as I call . . . all the stuff I add on: hairspray, toothpaste, face cream, you know . . . condiments!!)

But this rain is making me mad. We even baked 48 cookies in hopes they'd still have it. We've got faith!! Or Dave's going to be eating a lot of cookies while we're gone . . . I'm sure Gramma will help him. They're her favorite!!

Per chance, it does rain, Charity will just have a "normal" day at school. And I won't even know what to do with myself. I'll have the day off. My house is already clean, everything will be packed after my shower in the morning, can't really start any major projects. I am going to take my laptop to Nashville Computer so it can be fixed while I'm on vacation. Yay!! That will take up some time. I offered to work if it does rain, but I don't think they're going to take me up on it . . . which I guess is okay. Paycheck will be kinda' shabby for this week.

Probably since it's so late now . . . I'll take a lil' snoozie since I've been staying up way too late. Now that sounds like a nice day!!

How Sweet it is . . .

. . . to be loved by you and you and you!!!! Can't think of any other word to describe this truly special day when we honor our mothers . . . and are honored!! :o)

Church this morning . . . starting out with choir at 8:45 am.

Sis. Becton spoke, so awesome and powerful!!

Psalm 127:4~
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Such an amazing demonstration at the conclusion as children went forth as "arrows" and broke through targets carrying on as preachers, musicians, upholding doctrine, holiness and prayer!! WoW!!! So good!! Will definitely review again on the webcast. I'm sure every mother's heart was touched as mine, as I thanked God for Charity and asked her to order her steps in His Word!!

Charity wrote me a beautiful card (shaped like a dress) in Sunday School and gave me a journal. Sweet!!

Came home and Dave had started a scrumptious, sentimental meal before church for Mom and I. He made his Gram's Meatballs and Authentic Italian Sauce. The one's Mom had when she was a kid. Soooooo yummy. Way over the points today . . . especially after our final treat: a visit to Marble Slab Creamery for dessert this evening. Mom and I both adore ice cream!!! And even though it was a little chilly, the ice cream was a sweet treat in cahoots with a super, sweet day!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

Nothing says "I love you" like pictures!!

GOT IN!!!

So the highlight of our day today was Charity's Kindergarten pre-screening - that I have to admit, I've been slightly worried about.

I love Brook Hollow, it's been a great little 4 year-old program for Charity, but I don't appreciate the unnecessary stress that put me under when they told me Charity was behind and they didn't feel she was ready to start Kindergarten in Fall 2008. Well, that was in January!! A little bit far off, I thought, but it still hit me like a ton of bricks.

And I'll forever be indebted to my dear friend, Allison, whom was the second call I made after stewing to my mother. Allison calmly reassured me that Charity was fine and she would have no trouble getting accepted to Nashville Christian. Poor Allison, she didn't know what she was getting into when she took that call that day. I was a little crazy at that point!! But she set my nerves at ease . . . here it is May and we just had our screening. That would have been a long 4 months. Thank you, Allison!! You are a true friend!! I love you!!

Charity did so good today! She was so confident and when the secretary asked her name, she boldly proclaimed, "Charity" and then injected, "I'm four years-old!" Usually we're lucky if she quietly mumbles her name!!!

Three nice, bubbly teachers took her to do her testing. She marched right in with them without hesitation. In no time, she was returned to us and they just started chatting small talk. Of course, at this point Dave and I are on the edge of seats wondering the verdict. I'm thinking are they going to send us a letter, a phone call, what?? They were relaxed and chatty and said something about all further correspondence would come from her teacher. I'm like, okay, so she'll let us know.

And finally the last thing one of them said to us, I think she could see the question in our eyes. She said, "She's fine, she's in!!" I almost jumped from my seat with a "Hallelujah!"

God is so good! I know she's going to be fine. I'll still have to overcome the concern of the next few years, because what her current teacher said is even if we put her in Kindergarten this year, her "behind-ness" will catch up with her eventually. I guess I'm just going to have to give this to God. I know I was never one that school came easy to, so I'm sure it could possibly be the same for her. But God got me through and He'll do the same for Charity!!

Brushfire = Fun = Perfect Gift!!!

I know people think I'm crazy, but I prayer about the silliest things. What others might say are just useless. But God says "Ask anything." And I being a literal person, take it literally.

So when it came to what I should give my Mom for her 50th . . . I did just that. I asked God . . . because I was starting to worry and didn't have any ideas of what to do. I was doing some web surfing last night and besides God giving me the thought, I have no idea where it came from. I started looking at pottery studios. The one that used to be conveniently located at the Bellevue Mall has relocated to Dickson . . . so off we headed to Green Hills today to find Brushfire Pottery Studio. We had no idea what we were going to do, but we knew we wanted Charity to make something for Nana's 50th that I could pack on the plane and get there safely. Something else to be in prayer about!!

Wow! The place was full of ideas!! So cute. I've never been to one of these places!! Even the least creative person could be inspired and fairly economical for a personalized gift. We decided on a nice large platter. This should be an interesting airplane trip!! We looked at a couple completed pieces for design ideas.

I think Mom's really going to like it. Actually, I think she's going to love it! Now my prayer is we get it there in one piece!!

First, some stripes around the bottom. Charity's hand prints (pink and purple) are two flowers coming out a pot. I carefully wrote "Happy 50th Birthday, Nana".
Charity signing and doing her self portrait on the back. Which color next?
And she loved this foot print so we had to put one on the back, too!!
Didn't get any pictures of the finish product, not intentionally. I guess it will be a surprise. We get to pick it up on Saturday. So I'll have a few days to figure out how to wrap it for my carry on!

So much fun. I can't wait to do it again. Our family will definitely be seeing more pottery gifts in their future!!

* I want to leave my laptop at the repair shop while I'm gone . . . so when I come home, I'll have a nice working laptop . . . it seems like a dream, it's been "broken" for so long!

Happy 50th, Mom!! ~ May 14th

* Don't have a clue what to give my Mom for her birthday. Dave thinks my visit alone is enough. I don't know. We've also planned a special family night away in Bar Harbor, with dinner and mini golf . . . so it should be fun!! But I'd still like to give her something to unwrap.

* Must remember to tan every day to maximize my "baked" look and the $40 I spent.

* Also wanting to get Charity signed up for gymnastics at Westside Athletic Club so it's all in place when we return from Maine.

I do feel good that we got all the Mother's Day cards out today!! Yay!! That's probably the earliest we've ever done that.

Life is Crazy!!

Bizzzzeee Weekend!!

This weekend was crazy busy!! I barely had time to think. And Saturday I didn't even turn a computer on! That is very rare for me!! Wow!! And I lived!! There was life before WWW!!! Amazing!!

Friday started off the fun at Mysty's with a Girl's movie marathon. A real marathon, I might add, we watched all of one movie: Dan in Real Life. Despite the opinions of others, I really liked it. A cute little, happy movie. The kind I like!! Took place in New England . . . that makes me love it more. Sweet Janet brought me home early, early in the morning, since I'm not big on not sleeping in my bed. All in all, it was a super fun girl's night!!

Dan in Real Life

Up good and an early on Saturday for Woman and The Word. We had a guest speaker, Sis. Thetus Tenney!! WoW!! I love women like her . . . she's amazing. I could listen to her talk all day. What a sweet lady! We had such an awesome time of food, fun and fellowship as we were all appointed to the ministry of encouragement.

Dave was working this Saturday so when I got home, Char and I headed down to Half Price Day at Goodwill. Got a few things . . . for Charity, of course!! Did a little grocery shopping for the week, whoo hoo!! I love it when I get errands done!

When Dave got home from prayer later Saturday, we went out and did something, but I can remember what, oh dear! . . . maybe it was Wal*Mart to finish up the grocery list . . . or was that the night we made Boca Burgers on the grill!?!? Ohhh, they're our favorite, but only on the grill. Any other way, not so much. But grilled . . . Yummers!!

Boca Burgers

Great Sunday church . . . with the ministry of Bro. Tenney. Awesome!! We "ate" so well this weekend. To quote, he said, "This isn't a snack shack church!" That's for sure!! He said so many things, I afraid I didn't catch it all. I'll definitely be going back and watching the webcast. Bro. Mark Condon ministered in music at the evening service. Such a blessed Sunday!!

We even squeezed a little picnic in Sunday afternoon at Percy Warner Park. Took our lunch, packed it up and headed out to enjoy the beautiful day and completely utilize every second of our weekend!!

That's what I call bizzzzeeee!!!!!!!

I do love Fridays, though!!

Today's going to be a good day . . . I profess it!!

Girl's Movie Marathon tonight at Mysty's (is that too many M's!!!) . . . I'm going tanning. Whoo hoo!! (I love to fake bake!! = I love skin cancer!!) It's all going to be so fun. I'm sure I'll have pics to post! Well, not of me tanning . . . YUCK!!! But of the girl gang!!

Charity's having a fun day too. She's got a petting zoo happening at school!! I can't wait to hear all about it. She loves bunnies so she's "hopping" she gets to see some, (excuse the pun, I'm so corny when I get hyper!!)

Now, if I can just focus on XRT and get through this not so fun stuff . . . :(

I don't like sad movies . . .

The Notebook

so we just watched "the notebook" and i hated it, i mean, well, i hate that it's sooo sad. i only like movies that are happy . . . with happy endings. i'm with ya' allison!! and then at the end dave says, "why are you crying?" hello!! did he not just watch the same movie with me!?!?! that's a man for ya'. "it's just a hollywood production," he says, "that didn't really happen." man, he does have a firm grasp of the obvious, doesn't he?? i love him even in his insensative state!!

The Notebook

i guess on a positive note, all the tear-jerking movie did for me was reiderated the importance of blogging!!
