This morning in church as we sang the "usual" worship choruses to our Creator, I was so touched by a simple line in "Draw Me Close to You". The second line of the song, and I've sang at least a million times before, says: "never let me go." It stood out to me as a dandelion on a nice, neat manicured lawn. Wow! Four words and my brain was thinking faster than I could note on my Palm Pilot. Think about it:
"Never let me go." . . . What if God did let me go? What if this was an option? I don't even want to imagine. When I fail or mess up or make a mistake like I so often do. If I fall short or don't measure up, what if God were to cast me from His Presence? What if He released me when my spiritual road gets rough. Upon committing my first "sin", what if that was it? What if I were let go forever? What an awful thought.
But this horrific, scary contemplation was very quickly followed by happy, rejoicing realization!! What an awesome and amazing God we serve! He could so put us out in our failures. He doesn't have to tolerate our constant mistakes and flaws. He doesn't have to encourage us when we fall or feel we can't go on. He doesn't have to bless us by allowing us back into His precious presence after sitting through a service and taking something so scared for granted. He doesn't have to forgive our sins. He didn't have to create the Sea of Forgetfulness. He didn't have to shed His blood and die on that cross.
Jesus doesn't have to draw me close to Him and He doesn't have to never let me go . . . but He does!!
